Eight dead in armed clashes in restive south Yemen

ADEN, Yemen, July 23 (Reuters) - At least eight people were killed in clashes between security forces and armed men on Thursday at an opposition gathering in south Yemen, where secessionist sentiment is on the rise, the local governor said.

Eighteen people, including the deputy security chief of the district, were injured in the clashes in Abyan province, said the state-run website [فقط الأعضاء المسجلين والمفعلين يمكنهم رؤية الوصلات . إضغط هنا للتسجيل], citing provincial governor Ahmed al-Maisari.

He blamed supporters of opposition ****** Tareq al-Fadli for the clashes which occurred during the gathering held to demand the release of detainees held during recent disturbances.

Yemen, a mountainous Arabian Peninsula country of 23 million, has been battling a wave of al Qaeda attacks in the past two years and a Shi'ite rebellion in its north, as well as an increasingly restive south angry over its marginalisation by the central government.

The violence has raised Western fears that the ancestral home of al Qaeda ****** Osama bin Laden, where poverty has fed lawlessness in outlying regions with weak government control, could become a new haven for Islamist militants. اليمن دولة جبلية في الجزيرة العربية يقطنها 23 مليون شخص و عانت في السنوات الأخيرة من هجمات للقاعدة و تمرد شيعي في الشمال بالإضافة إلى مقاومة متصاعدة في الجنوب ضد الحكومة المركزية. و قد اثار تصاعد التوتر في اليمن مخاوف الغرب لان تتحول البلاد الى ملاذ للمتشددين الاسلاميين حيث تعتبر اليمن الموطن الأصلي لأسامة بن لادن.
