Yemen Blast Kills 2, Wounds 20

SANAA, Yemen, July 25--A bomber exploded his device in a car outside police headquarters in the east Yemen town of Sayun on Friday, killing 2 people and injuring up to 20 others, witnesses and medics said.

The driver of the booby-trapped vehicle was also killed in the blast, one witness said, while another said the explosion sparked fires at the entrance to the police headquarters and neighboring buildings.

Hospital sources said the 20 wounded included both police and civilians in Sayun, in the heart of Hadramut province, is 700 km (430 miles) east of the capital Sanaa.

The Yemeni authorities have not yet commented about Friday's attack.

The country has seen several attacks attributed to or claimed by the Al-Qaeda network led by Osama bin Laden, who is originally from Yemen.

At least 5 people were killed earlier in an explosion at the main post office building in central Saada, a town in northwest Yemen.

Yemen's Saada province in mountains on the border with Saudi Arabia has been the heartland of an uprising launched by rebels in 2004 in which thousands of people have died.

Despite the ongoing violence, President Ali Abdullah Saleh declared last week the end of the clashes in the province.

"The clashes in Saada province ended three days ago, and God willing, it will not resume," Saleh said, referring to the four-year-old rebellion in which thousands of people have died.

On May 2, 18 people, mostly soldiers, were killed when a booby-trapped motorcycle exploded at the entrance to a mosque. That attack was in the northwestern town of Saada.

In May 30, Eight people were also killed when a gunman opened fire inside a mosque in a village north of the Yemeni capital during Friday prayers.
