Suicide bomber kills policeman in Yemen
(AFP) SANAA (AFP) — One policeman was killed and 17 people were wounded when a suicide bomber in a car detonated his device outside a police headquarters in the east Yemen town of Sayun on Friday, local police said. A police official blamed "extremist terrorists who use Islam as a cover" for the attack, which he said targeted a compound housing the Central Security and General Security networks, the Saba state news agency reported. The official, who was not named, said 11 policemen and six women were wounded, adding that the explosion damaged neighbouring houses. The driver of the booby-trapped vehicle had not been identified and was "torn into pieces" by the blast, Saba said earlier quoting another unnamed police official. Sayun, in the heart of Hadramut province, is 700 kilometres (430 miles) east of the capital Sanaa, and is known for its mud-brick architecture. The attack was claimed by a little-known Islamist radical group, the Organisation of Islamic Jihad in Yemen. "We, the Organisation of Islamic Jihad in Yemen, claim responsibility for the martyr attack in Hadramut, and congratulate the martyr (attacker) for being rewarded in paradise," the group said in an emailed statement. "This act is a (lesson) to those who might be tempted to harm the religion of Islam, and we announce that we will annihilate them. Our start was in Hadramut on Friday... and will stretch to reach every corrupted part of Yemen," it added. The statement demanded the Yemeni government pay "a fine of five million dollars if it wants an end to the attacks that are terrifying the people." The group first came into the spotlight last month when it issued a statement demanding the cancellation of a summer festival, which starts this Saturday in the capital Sanaa, featuring Arab pop concerts. "If the festival is not cancelled within 48 hours, we will turn it into crying and wailing," Friday's statement warned, accusing the organisers of "corrupting" minds through singing and the mixing of sexes. Bombing hits police HQ in Yemen
BBC News, Friday, 25 July 2008 Two people have been killed in a bomb attack at a police headquarters in the east of Yemen. The dead are reported to have been the suicide bomber himself and a policeman. Eight others are reported to have been injured in the attack. It took place in the town of Sayun, in the province of Hadramawt. Militants said to be linked to al-Qaeda have admitted being behind a number of recent attacks in Yemen. A month ago the authorities said they had arrested Haitham bin Saad, alleged to be one of the most wanted al-Qaeda militants there. The government has also been fighting an insurgency by Shia rebels in the north of the country. [فقط الأعضاء المسجلين والمفعلين يمكنهم رؤية الوصلات . إضغط هنا للتسجيل] |

Seven women in those houses were wounded. Witnesses said the explosion left body parts and bloodstained clothing scattered in the compound's yard. Yemen: Suicide bomb attack targets police headquarters
Adnkronos International English, Italy, 25 July 2008 Sayun, 25 July (AKI) - A suicide attack outside police headquarters in eastern Yemen on Friday killed at least two people, among them a policeman, and injured 18 others. The attack took place in the town of Sayun, located 700 kilometres east of the capital Sanaa, in the Hadramut province. No group has claimed responsibility for the blast. However, Yemeni security forces say that al-Qaeda could be behind the attack, according to a local news report by the Mareb Press. About three months ago, three bombs were set off at the door of the same police headquarters in Sayun by unknown assailants. In the same area, three important al-Qaeda operatives were arrested by police forces. Due to the difficult terrain in the desert areas of Hadramut and Mareb, al-Qaeda operatives usually seek refuge there. Tribal groups who control the area also make it difficult for police authorities to capture them. [فقط الأعضاء المسجلين والمفعلين يمكنهم رؤية الوصلات . إضغط هنا للتسجيل] |

Bomber rams car into police station
Two killed, 20 injured in Yemen attack SANAA (Agencies) Two people, including a policeman, were killed and up to 20 others were wounded when a suicide bomber in a car exploded his device outside police headquarters in the east Yemen town of Sayun on Friday, witnesses and medics said. It was not clear who carried out the attack in which the driver of the vehicle and a policeman were killed, according to AlArabiya TV. The blast caused damage to some buildings in the area and a power outage, AlArabiya reported. Hospital sources said the 20 wounded included both police and civilians. There was no immediate claim of responsibility Background Yemen, the ancestral home of Osama bin Laden, is grappling with a campaign by al-Qaeda militants, who have said they were behind several attacks in recent months, including a shelling near the U.S. embassy and a mortar attack on a refinery in Aden. The government has also been fighting Shiite rebels loyal to Abdul-Malik al-Houthi in the northern province of Saada since 2004, a battle which President Ali Abdullah Saleh said last week had ended.
